These 18 “spectators” did NOTHING to help the man in crisis. The headline for this publishing could have been “MAN SAVED” rather than “DOOMED”, if someone literally gave him a hand. Some jobs unfortunately have attached to them a certain amount of emotional detachment in order to be either objective, executed in an efficient manner, and/or to protect the person performing their job ( firefighters, nurses, physicians, police officers, military, etc.).So as far as the journalist/photographer involved, though I do not agree with his actions they were at least consistent with his employment description. But the 18 people who stood by and did nothing (exempting anyone of physical or emotional disadvantage)… I have more issue with them than the photographer. Though I as a photographer, I would not behave as such in this situation. So what is the real issue? The sensationalizing of such a tragic event by news hawkers? The fact that we live in a society that this behavior is rewarded, and others are too self absorbed, choose to stand by and not take action to help another individual in distress?Arguably it is not a person’s job to help someone in need.We do have hired professionals who do this. But are you the person who would have watched this or attempted to help in some manner…grab security, call 911, or possibly put yourself in harms way and given this man hand. Or are you the person who stands by, does nothing, and then is shocked because someone else didn’t bother to help either? So next time you walk by a homeless person and think it is a scam… see an injured animal on the side of the road and just leave it there to die because it isn’t your responsibility or it is contemporary Darwinism…or just know that someone is sad or distressed and you are too self absorbed to empathize , give a kind word or a hug.Truth is you are the PROBLEM. So do something about it.

Regarding…the New York post “DOOMED” front page story of the man crushed by a subway…

Although I do not side with the photographer or the publisher of this story, I will point out that it is reported that 18 people stood by during this tragedy.
These 18 “spectators” did NOTHING to help the man in crisis.
The headline for this publishing could have been “MAN SAVED” rather than “DOOMED”, if someone literally gave him a hand.

Some jobs unfortunately have attached to them a certain amount of emotional detachment in order to be either objective, executed in an efficient manner, and/or to protect the person performing their job ( firefighters, nurses, physicians, police officers, military, etc.).
So as far as the journalist/photographer involved, though I do not agree with his actions they were at least consistent with his employment description.
But the 18 people who stood by and did nothing
(exempting anyone of physical or emotional disadvantage)… I have more issue with them than the photographer.
Though I as a photographer, I would not behave as such in this situation.

So what is the real issue? The sensationalizing of such a tragic event by news hawkers? The fact that we live in a society that this behavior is rewarded, and others are too self absorbed, choose to stand by and not take action to help another individual in distress?
Arguably it is not a person’s job to help someone in need.
We do have hired professionals who do this.
But are you the person who would have watched this or attempted to help in some manner…grab security, call 911, or possibly put yourself in harms way and given this man hand.
Or are you the person who stands by, does nothing, and then is shocked because someone else didn’t bother to help either?

So next time you walk by a homeless person and think it is a scam…
see an injured animal on the side of the road and just leave it there to die because it isn’t your responsibility or it is contemporary Darwinism…
or just know that someone is sad or distressed and you are too self absorbed to empathize , give a kind word or a hug.
Truth is you are the PROBLEM. So do something about it.

I was recently notified that “proud momma” was awarded a nomination in the “Americana” category, 5th International Master’s Color Cup of Photography 2011.
:)
“Proud Mama” is part of a series of images taken with old/abused/water damaged Velvia, Ilford, Konica, Agfa, and Kodachrome film… using old cameras( Polaroid sx70,Kodak Brownie, Mamiya c330 tlr, Buschman 2x3 press camera, Rolleiflex tlr) or holga cameras. Digital just can’t communicate at the level analog does.
There is a sweet female dog digging through the trash. You could tell she just had some puppies. I followed her for hours hoping to find an owner or her puppies… so that I could take care of them. I was unsuccessful.

It is a time for being thoughtful and deliberate…

Everyone is talking about Osama Bin Laden’s death, and rightfully so. He was a hatemonger, a sociopath, a mass murderer, and a true terrorist. The actions taken against him were justified and I am relieved that he no longer has a place in our world. But the rhetoric following his death is just as disturbing as the actions taken by Osama Bin Laden and his followers.

I would ask that we don’t lower ourselves socially or spiritually to their level. Our behavior following his death is even more important than the efforts it has taken to bring him to justice. Be relieved,be thankful,be thoughtful. Don’t emulate the destructive, hateful behavior that fueled the egos of sociopaths like Osama Bin Laden and his followers.
